Chiropractors are highly skilled practitioners in the art of hands-on spinal adjustment. An adjustment is to correct the spinal subluxations which are detected during the examination. A chiropractic adjustment involves applying a specific force in a precise direction that will best benefit the patient to "unlock" the subluxated bone from its improper position.
The purpose of the adjustment is to help restore a more normal position and/or motion to a joint, which can often lead to pain relief. Using this technique, Chiropractors can treat any joint in your body…from your spine all the way out to your fingers and toes. Treatments are always within your comfort level and can often be quite relaxing.
The term subluxation refers to a bone that is out of alignment compared to the one above and below it. When this occurs, pressure is being put on the nerve that exits between the vertebra preventing complete communication between the brain & the body and the body back up to the brain.
Research continues to support the safety and efficacy of chiropractic treatment. Chiropractors do not use drugs or surgery, which have their place but may produce side effects and complications. The one chiropractic treatment with any significant risk of harm is adjustment of the cervical spine (neck manipulation). As each patient is unique, each treatment and each adjustment is unique as well. Your age, size and individual problem will determine which technique(s) will best put you on the road to feeling better.
Chiropractic treatment involves the manipulation of joints, with the goal of decreasing pain by improving movement and function within that joint. When a joint is adjusted, there is a natural change in the internal pressure of that joint. This change results in the release of gas, which is normally dissolved in the fluid that lubricates the joint. The release of this gas may produce a "crack" or "pop" sound similar to when someone cracks their knuckles. No bones are being broken and it is completely safe.
Yes, Chiropractors study for at least seven to eight years at a university and post-graduate school, clocking over 4,824 hours in Chiropractic college alone. Just like a medical doctor, their studies include anatomy, physiology, pathology, microbiology, and neurology, all with clinical labs, just to name a few. Chiropractors are considered specialist, therefore while in graduate school, they also study specific subjects pertaining to their specialty including bio-mechanics, radiology, philosophy, research, and spinal adjusting techniques.
Chiropractors treat problems of the musculoskeletal system. This includes lower back pain, neck pain, headaches, sciatica, muscle stains, disk herniations, and jaw problems. You may be interested in prevention of a problem or you may want to learn more about your body and improve your quality of life. These are all great reasons to consider consulting a Chiropractor.
As the body changes very rapidly during pregnancy, there is a large amount of stress placed on the musculoskeletal system. The joints in the body try to compensate for these changes, and as a result, they are often sore and stiff. Your Chiropractor has special techniques that will help make you comfortable during all the stages of pregnancy. Chiropractic is safe for both the mother and fetus and often helps to reduce those "typical pregnancy" aches and pains.
Chiropractors are trained to treat patients of all ages and sizes. Chiropractic has different techniques to suite the needs of patients from small to large & young to old. An adjustment for a baby is not the same as it is for an adult. Talk to the Chiropractor with any questions or concerns if you are thinking about bring in child.
Prior to meeting with the Chiropractor, you will be asked to complete a New Patient Application. Using this form as a guide, you and the Chiropractor will discuss your health history in detail. This will be followed by a full physical examination. Your Chiropractor will then decide if further testing, such as x-rays is required. After determining if x-rays are required, the Chiropractor will show you your x-rays, review what was found, explain what these findings mean and how they may pertain to your situation, and then discuss the results you can expect from chiropractic care in our office. Questions are always welcome.
Once it is determined that chiropractic care is safe for your condition, you will most likely receive your first adjustment. With your consent, the Chiropractor will walk you through everything that they will do before it is done. Your comfort is our first priority. Make sure to ask questions if there is something that you do not understand. At the close of the visit, you will be given a few specific instructions to help make achieving your goal easier.
A plan of care is a personalized recommend course of action for your specific case. Each patient is unique and therefore we tailor a plan that is personal to you and your health goals. Assessment are done throughout your care to make sure that goals are being met. If there is a delay in healing, changes may be made to your plan to better serve you. After hearing your personalized plan you can decide if chiropractic care is right for you.
The choice to continue chiropractic care is always up to you. Although pain is the most common reason people initially go to the Chiropractor, chiropractic treatment often helps people reach an improved state of health. They have less pain, greater freedom of movement, better sleeping patterns and an improved sense of well being. The daily rigors of life such as computer work, commuting, stress and lack of time for one's self are hard on the body. Many people use chiropractic "maintenance care" to function at a better state of health. The frequency of treatment depends on other lifestyle factors such as exercise, stress reduction and nutrition to name a few.
This is one of the most common questions we are asked. To provide you with realistic expectations, many factors affecting your recovery time must be taken into consideration, including: acute vs. chronic pain. first episode or recurrent problem. history of previous injuries. general health. general fitness level (strength, flexibility and cardiovascular health). poor postural hygiene lifestyle (work, diet, sleep). patient comprehension and compliance with recommendations. kept appointments. stress (physical/mental/chemical). family history. These factors and your individual health goals combine to structure the frequency and duration of your care.
To optimize the effects of treatment, stretching and strengthening programs are almost always initiated. As always, the choice to follow instructions plays a very important role in both recovery and long-term prognosis/outcome. Continuing with your individualized exercise program can help you minimize the occurrence of future episodes. This leaves you more time and energy to do the things you want to do.
